CHAPTER 4: My son

"Mom, I can see you clearly! You don't need to shout so loud!"

As soon as Dennis got to the car, he started to grumble at me. From the time he was born until now, he had never once asked me who his father was. Perhaps Dennis understood that it was a pain his mother would never want to discuss.

"It's just that mommy is so excited to see her little darling!"

I looked at Dennis, unable to hide the bright smile on my face.

"Ah, what's the point of missing me! You should be looking for someone to lean on!"

"How was your day, my little man? Do you have any stories to tell me?"

I knew what my son was going to say next, so I quickly changed the subject. I was all too familiar with Dennis's style. While other kids might fear their mother remarrying, my son seemed to wish I'd find someone to lean on every minute of every day. Calling Dennis my "young father" wouldn't be too far off the mark.

"Nothing to tell. But what about you? How are the people pursuing you? Did anyone catch your eye?"

"No matter what we talk about, it always comes back to me!"

I've never once been able to avoid Dennis's questions. No matter where we start, we always end up talking about my love life.

"It's the same as always. Like you, there's nothing to tell."

But Dennis didn't let up. He continued his questioning.

"How can there be nothing to tell? With all the people chasing after you, surely one of them caught your eye?"

Looking at Dennis's expression, I couldn't help but laugh. I didn't know who he took after, but he spoke like a "little old man."

"Oh, my sweet son! I just want to be alone right now. Besides, none of the people chasing me are my type."

"Besides, you tell me—who could be worthy of someone as beautiful as your mother? It's not easy to find someone who's both as lovely as a flower and as capable in work, while also having a cute son like this! Wouldn't you agree?" I looked at Dennis with a smile. It seems that only in moments spent with my son do I feel truly relaxed and free like this. I can say whatever I want, do whatever I like, without worrying about how others see me.

"You know, you've used that line hundreds of times!"

Dennis rubbed his forehead in mock exasperation. His "mature beyond his years" look was absolutely adorable to me.

"Do you know why I haven't accepted anyone? Because I already have you! I just want to spend my life with someone as handsome as Dennis!"

"But enough of that, let's go home!" I said, gently nudging Dennis into the car. If we stayed any longer, I wouldn't be able to escape this "little rascal."

The two of us got into the car and drove home. Five years have passed, and everything has changed. I'm no longer the useless housewife that despicable man once called me. Now I'm the CEO of a large corporation, I own my own home, and most importantly, I have Dennis. For me, whether now or five years ago, Dennis has always been the greatest gift God has given me. I, Elwyn, may have regretted that disastrous marriage a thousand times, but I've never once regretted the sudden appearance of Dennis.

When we arrived at our beautiful home, as usual, Dennis ran out to the backyard to play with our pets, while I went into the kitchen to cook. The atmosphere was truly cozy.

Today, I had prepared a lot of dishes, all of Dennis's favorites. Before I knew it, it was almost seven in the evening. Dennis was still playing with the little animals in the yard. Since I often had to work and it was just the two of us at home, I had decided to adopt a puppy and a kitten. Each day, the pet care company would send someone over to feed them. As a result, Dennis now had "a pair of friends."

"Dennis, stop playing! Come in, take a bath, and then have dinner!" I called out from the kitchen.

"Okay!"

Although Dennis replied with "okay," he didn't move. Seeing him play so happily, I didn't want to rush him. Besides, today there was nothing pressing, so letting him play a bit longer was fine.

With that thought, I turned off the stove and headed to my office. While Dennis was still playing, I could take care of some work.

Over the past five years, I couldn't even remember all that I had gone through. From a pregnant woman with nothing to a CEO of a large corporation, I had to work a hundred, a thousand times harder than the average person. Thinking back to when I first came to this city, with no money, no job, no help, living in a damp and run-down slum—I couldn't help but shudder. But it didn't matter; it was all in the past.

Perhaps the best decision of my life was to return to school. Without money to cover tuition, I had to study and work at the same time. Many times I thought I was at death's door, but thinking of my child, I gritted my teeth and endured. Over the past five years, the word "Daje" has always echoed in my mind. Yes, I had to keep going; nothing could break a mother. Heaven did not forsake me—I won. Now, my son and I are living a very warm life.

After finishing the documents on my desk, the clock showed it was nearly eight o'clock. I can eat late, but Dennis is still a child, and eating too late is not good for him. With that thought, I immediately left my office and headed to the backyard—where Dennis was playing.

As soon as Dennis saw me step outside, he ran towards me. His face was filled with an indescribable excitement.

"Mom, someone's here to see you!"

"Who is it, my son?"

I didn't have many friends here, and it was very rare for anyone to visit at this hour. If it were a work matter, I would have received a message or email, but there was none. So, the likelihood of it being someone from the company was very low.

"I don't know. But they said you and they are very close."

Dennis's words piqued my curiosity. I really wanted to know who this "very close" person was. Moreover, Dennis's eager expression made me even more curious.

"Alright, let me go see."

I quickly grabbed a coat and stepped outside. The weather had started to turn cold, and I'd heard the forecast say that this year would be an early winter, but I still didn't expect it to be this cold. As soon as I stepped out of the house, a cold wind blew, giving me goosebumps.

"Hello,…"

"Hello…"

I froze in place when I saw the face of the person at the gate. The nightmare had finally arrived—Alain, it was him.
