Chapter 10 Where Is the Wedding Gift You Prepared?
As the workday was winding down, Lawrence called to pick Hazel up and take her home.
After waiting at the designated spot for a few minutes, a sleek black Maybach slowly pulled up and stopped in front of her.
The rear window rolled down, revealing Lawrence's refined and handsome face. "Hop in."
Hazel climbed into the car, holding a box in her arms, and turned to greet Lawrence. "Hey, Lawrence."
Hearing her formal address, Lawrence frowned slightly but didn't say anything.
"Should I freshen up before meeting your grandfather?" After a moment of hesitation, Hazel asked.
"No need, you look great. There'll be more people later, so don't stress." Lawrence reassured her as the car drove back to Serenity Heights. Hazel, still holding her box, followed Lawrence into the house.
The first-floor servants were noticeably busier than usual. The butler greeted them as they entered, his gaze lingering on Hazel for a moment. "Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Johnson, welcome back."
Lawrence nodded, his tone not particularly warm. "Where is everyone?"
"Mr. Jeremy Johnson and the others will be back shortly." The butler replied.
Nodding again, Lawrence didn't say more and maneuvered his wheelchair upstairs. Hazel smiled politely at the butler and followed.
In their room, Hazel put her things away.
She hadn't mentioned her resignation to Lawrence, and he hadn't asked. They each went about their own tasks in a harmonious atmosphere.
About half an hour later, a servant came to call them. "Mr. Lawrence Johnson, Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Jeremy Johnson has asked for you downstairs."
"Got it." Lawrence responded, and Hazel suddenly felt a wave of nervousness, her heart pounding.
After all, as Lawrence's wife, she was bound to meet his family.
"Are you nervous?" Lawrence asked, noticing her tightly gripping the back of his wheelchair. She quickly loosened her grip.
"A little." She admitted honestly.
Lawrence chuckled softly and patted her hand. "It's okay, I'm here."
His simple reassurance calmed Hazel's nerves.
After all, Lawrence was her husband.
Pushing him downstairs, they entered a living room already filled with people. Besides Luna, Hazel hadn't met any of them before.
As they appeared, everyone turned to look, their gazes scrutinizing Hazel with a mix of curiosity and disdain.
The attention made her uncomfortable.
Hazel stared back defiantly. She wasn't about to be intimidated!
The elders of the Johnson Family seemed taken aback by her boldness, feeling a bit awkward being stared down by a junior.
"This must be Lawrence's new wife. She's quite beautiful, no wonder she caught his eye." A middle-aged woman on the sofa, Edith Kate, spoke first. She wore an elegant dark green dress, her figure full and her smile sharp.
Edith was implying Hazel married Lawrence for her looks!
Hazel cursed inwardly, ready to retort, but Lawrence beat her to it. "Marriage is about mutual attraction, Aunt Edith. Don't you agree?"
Edith's face stiffened, and she nodded reluctantly under Lawrence's cold gaze. "Yeah, Lawrence is right."
Since taking over the Johnson Family business, Lawrence had used decisive measures to manage many people and led the Johnson Group to new heights.
Even though he was now disabled, the family still relied on him.
With their interests at stake, they feared him despite any private complaints.
Hazel appreciated Lawrence standing up for her, feeling a touch of gratitude.
They were married and on the same team now.
Whatever their private issues, they had to present a united front to the Johnson Family.
Lawrence's subtle warning made the others more respectful, their attitudes towards Hazel slightly improving.
"Hazel and I have been married for a few days now. Since this is the first time you're meeting her, why don't you introduce yourselves?" Lawrence's tone was gentle but firm, leaving no room for refusal.
The family members exchanged uneasy glances.
After all, none of them had shown any respect during the wedding.
"Hazel, I'm Lawrence's uncle, Gerald Johnson. That's his other uncle, Bryan Johnson. You've met Bryan's wife, Luna. Just call us the same as Lawrence does." Gerald spoke first, and Hazel nodded, greeting each of them.
"These are our gifts for you and Lawrence. We were delayed the other day, so we're giving them now. I hope you don't mind." Gerald's wife, Edith, stood up and handed Hazel two large gifts.
Hazel thanked her and accepted them without hesitation.
There was no point in being modest now.
"Aunt Edith, isn't that a bit stingy?" Lawrence's sudden comment made Edith uneasy, her expression faltering. "Lawrence, what do you mean? Of course, we have more gifts for Hazel. We just forgot them today, but we'll bring them tomorrow."
Lawrence was clearly pushing for more.
Lawrence then looked at Bryan, who quickly added, "Yes, we have more gifts for Hazel. We'll bring them tomorrow."
If Jeremy hadn't insisted, they wouldn't have bothered with gifts at all.
Lawrence wasn't letting them off easy.
Satisfied with their promises, Lawrence looked upstairs. "Grandpa, you heard them. Uncle Gerald and Uncle Bryan promised to bring the gifts tomorrow. They can't back out now."
Everyone's faces turned pale, looking upstairs.
Jeremy stood there, having listened for who knew how long, his expression unreadable.
Luna silently cursed Lawrence. He must have known Jeremy was listening and set them up.
"Of course, I heard. Gerald, Bryan, make sure you bring the gifts tomorrow." Jeremy, in his seventies but still sharp and commanding, spoke firmly.
"Yes, Dad." With Jeremy's order, Gerald and Bryan had no choice but to comply, swallowing their frustration.
After Lawrence's parents passed away, he was the sole heir, managing the Johnson Group. Jeremy, feeling guilty, was particularly lenient with him.
Taking advantage of the wedding, Lawrence was determined to make them pay.
