Chapter 11 Vampire Lawrence
Hazel had no clue what kind of extravagant gifts they might offer, but seeing these people so frustrated gave her a sense of satisfaction.
She knew a bit about the secrets within wealthy families, especially one like the Johnson Family, where scheming and backstabbing were inevitable.
They looked down on Lawrence, a disabled man who still held most of the Johnson Family's power, and naturally, they looked down on her, his wife.
Lowering her head, Hazel's lips curled into a mocking, playful smile.
"Hey, Uncle Gerald, isn't your farm over at Emerald Peak pretty nice?" Lawrence said, not planning to let them off the hook.
Gerald almost lost his cool. If Jeremy weren't there, he would have jumped up and cursed Lawrence out.
Before he could react, Bryan's face darkened as well.
"Uncle Bryan, that commercial street you own hasn't been doing well lately. How about giving it to Hazel as a welcome gift?" Lawrence suggested.
This guy was a vampire!
At that moment, Gerald and Bryan had the same thought that Lawrence was shameless!
He was taking advantage of Jeremy's presence to demand so much!
"Do as Lawrence says," Jeremy's words forced Gerald and Bryan to swallow their protests, leaving them no choice but to agree with grim faces.
"Then I'll thank Uncle Gerald and Uncle Bryan on Hazel's behalf. You wouldn't cheat us, would you?" Lawrence asked, his tone gentle as if he didn't notice their resentment.
"Of course not, Lawrence. Do you think Bryan and I are scoundrels? The items will be delivered tomorrow," Gerald forced a smile, emphasizing the word "scoundrels" as if cursing Lawrence.
Lawrence nodded in satisfaction and patted Hazel's hand. "Push me over there to sit, Hazel."
Seeing how Lawrence made Gerald and Bryan willingly fork over money, Hazel was thrilled inside but maintained a polite smile. "Sure, Lawrence, I'll push you over."
Their display of affection infuriated the others.
Jeremy, standing upstairs, cast a meaningful glance at Lawrence and Hazel before heading down.
Hazel greeted Jeremy as "Grandpa" and stayed by Lawrence's side, handing him fruit and massaging his legs, looking every bit the loving and dutiful wife.
None of Gerald and Bryan's children attended the dinner, supposedly busy with other matters, according to Lawrence.
Hazel didn't mind; the fewer people to deal with, the better.
After the earlier incident, Edith and Luna didn't dare to cause trouble, making Hazel feel more at ease.
Dinner was soon ready, and Jeremy signaled everyone to take their seats.
Hazel pushed Lawrence to sit on Jeremy's right and was about to sit next to him when Jeremy called her to sit between them.
During dinner, Jeremy asked Hazel a few simple questions, which she answered well, displaying grace and poise. Jeremy, pleased, handed her a bank card. "This card has fifty million dollars. Consider it a wedding gift. Lawrence is my favorite grandson, and I'm happy he found someone he loves."
Jeremy seemed like a doting grandfather, but Hazel had her doubts. If he cared so much for Lawrence, why had he only shown up now, long after their wedding?
From the moment he came downstairs, something felt off about their interaction, though she couldn't pinpoint what.
Hazel glanced at Lawrence, who nodded slightly, prompting her to accept the card and thank Jeremy sweetly. "Thank you, Grandpa. I'll take good care of Lawrence."
Jeremy's smile widened, and he praised her several times.
"Jeremy treats Hazel so well, giving such a large sum right away. It really pays to marry the right person," Luna suddenly remarked, her tone dripping with sarcasm, shattering the warm atmosphere.
Hazel's expression darkened, and Lawrence's lips thinned in displeasure.
"Are you teaching me how to do things?" Jeremy slammed his utensils on the table, his voice cold. Luna paled and hurried to explain. "Jeremy, that's not what I meant."
Hazel spoke coolly, "Then what do you mean, Aunt Luna? From the moment I entered this house, you've disliked me. Are you jealous of the money Grandpa gave me, or are you upset it wasn't given to your niece, Sandra?"
Luna's repeated jabs had pushed Hazel to her limit. She wouldn't just take it lying down.
Hazel's blunt question made Luna panic. She did want Sandra to marry Lawrence, but that had to be handled discreetly, not in front of Jeremy.
As expected, Jeremy's face darkened further. "Luna, you may have married into the Johnson Family, but I'm still here. Keep your inappropriate thoughts to yourself. Not just anyone can join this family."
Jeremy's bluntness left Luna's face alternating between red and white, unable to retort.
Bryan tried to mediate. "Dad, don't be angry. Luna knows she was wrong. Please don't scold her."
Jeremy snorted, and Lawrence took the opportunity to serve him some food. "Grandpa, let's eat before the food gets cold."
Hazel chimed in, "Grandpa, don't be angry. It's bad for your health."
After a few soothing words, Jeremy's anger subsided a bit, and Gerald changed the subject, restoring a warmer atmosphere at the table.
Luna shot a resentful glance at Bryan, who ignored her, leaving her to eat quietly.
It was all Hazel's fault!
Hazel should never have married into this family!
She wouldn't let Hazel off the hook!
She bit into her meat viciously, as if it were Hazel's flesh, her eyes filled with hatred and scheming.
The dinner ended on a relatively pleasant note. Gerald and Bryan's families left soon after, not wanting to stay any longer at the Johnson Villa.
Jeremy went for a walk with the butler, leaving Hazel and Lawrence alone in the villa.
"Lawrence, how about I push you out for a walk too?" Hazel suggested, feeling happy about the gifts and money they had received.
Lawrence raised an eyebrow slightly. "I have an online meeting soon. If you're bored, you can go out by yourself, but you might run into Grandpa."
At that, Hazel quickly shook her head. "No need. I'd rather stay with you than go out alone."
