Chapter 23 Jeremy Arrives

With a self-deprecating smile, Hazel replied to Kelly's message.

The Anderson family would be thrilled if she were dead; no one there would care about her.

The hospital room door opened, and Louis walked in. Seeing Hazel awake, his puppy-like eyes almost welled up with tears. "Thank God, you're finally awake."

Noticing Louis's mix of fear and relief, Hazel pondered for a moment. "Did you bring us to the hospital?"

Louis nodded repeatedly, pulling a chair over and plopping down by the bed. "You have no idea how scared I was that night. You and Lawrence were both passed out outside the house, and your clothes were all disheveled."

Hazel coughed, slightly embarrassed by Louis's bluntness. Even though it was an emergency, his words could easily be misunderstood.

Realizing his mistake, Louis scratched the back of his head awkwardly. "I'll definitely find out why the house caught fire and give you and Lawrence an explanation."

His vacation lodge had caught fire, nearly killing Lawrence and Hazel. When Louis got the call, it felt like his world was collapsing.

Hazel nodded. "Alright, I trust Mr. Martin will get to the bottom of this."

"Okay, you rest up. I'll go check on Lawrence." Louis said.

With that, Louis left the room. Lawrence had woken up earlier, and since the fire was his responsibility, he had no excuses if Lawrence blamed him. But how the two of them ended up unconscious outside the house was still a mystery to him.

Seeing Louis leave, Hazel got out of bed and headed to Lawrence's room. The rooms were connected, so it wasn't hard to find.

Compared to her room, Lawrence's had more people in it. Even Jason was there.

Lawrence was sitting up in bed, and as if sensing her presence, he turned to look at Hazel as she appeared at the door. Their eyes met, and for a moment, both felt a flutter.

"You're awake?" They spoke in unison, making Jason and Louis notice Hazel at the door.

Seeing Hazel had followed, Louis opened his mouth to say something but then decided against it. He and Jason exchanged a glance and quietly left the room.

Hazel walked over to the bed, her eyes glancing at Lawrence's legs. "Are your legs okay?"

Surprised that Hazel's first concern was his legs, Lawrence's eyes softened with a smile. "I'm fine. Louis said the house caught fire, and when he arrived, we were both unconscious outside. Did you save me?"

He had known something was off as soon as he woke up. Without his sleep aid, he was a light sleeper and should have woken up during such an incident. The problem must have been with the scent Hazel mentioned.

"Yeah," Hazel nodded, sitting down by the bed. "I woke up in the middle of the night and saw the fire. We were both affected by that scent and couldn't move. I had no choice but to push you out the window and jump out myself. I don't remember what happened after that."

Lawrence finally understood the whole situation. No wonder they had passed out outside the house.

"Those people are despicable, using that kind of incense to try and burn us alive!"

Hazel's voice carried a hint of anger. Growing up around Chloe, she was used to various scents, which might have been why she wasn't as affected by the incense. Otherwise, they might have both died there.

"Mr. Martin is investigating, and I will too," Lawrence said. He had some suspicions but no evidence yet. His expression gave Hazel a clue.

Lowering her eyes slightly, Hazel didn't say anything more.

"What are you thinking about?" Lawrence asked, seeing her head down.

"Nothing," she shook her head instinctively. "Honey, did anyone from the Johnson family call to check on you?"

Changing the subject, Lawrence nodded. "Grandpa called to ask about me. He's on his way here."

Jeremy was coming to the hospital? Hazel was a bit surprised but realized it made sense. With Lawrence hospitalized, Jeremy, as his grandfather, would naturally come to visit.

"Thank you for saving me," Lawrence suddenly said, catching Hazel off guard.

"It's nothing. I don't want to be a widow, especially since my husband is so handsome and wealthy," she joked, trying to lighten the mood.

Knowing she was trying to flatter him, Lawrence raised an eyebrow. "How about I invest in your new company?"

"Really?" Hazel's face lit up. With Lawrence's investment, many of her problems would be solved.

"When have I ever lied to you?" Lawrence said. Even if it was just to repay her for saving his life, he would help with such small matters.

Hazel knew Lawrence had never lied to her. Despite their short marriage, he had already secured many good things for her.

"Thank you, honey," she said sweetly, noticing a fruit basket on the bedside table. She picked up an apple and started peeling it.

"You don't need to do that. You should rest," Lawrence tried to stop her, reminding her she was also a patient.

Hazel shook her head, her hands skillfully peeling the apple. "I don't have anything else to do right now. I'll just keep you company."

Seeing her insist, Lawrence let her be.

Jeremy arrived quickly. When he walked in, Hazel was chatting with Lawrence. Seeing Jeremy enter, Hazel's expression became more reserved. "Grandpa, you're here?"

"Grandpa," Lawrence greeted him calmly.

Jeremy's eyes showed concern. "How are you feeling?"

"Much better," Lawrence nodded.

Jeremy then looked at Hazel. "Are you alright, Hazel?"

Caught off guard, Hazel shook her head. "Thank you for your concern, Grandpa. I'm fine. I'll leave you two to talk."

It was clear the grandfather and grandson had things to discuss. She didn't want to be in the way.

After she left, the room was quiet, with just the two Johnson men.

"Lawrence, what happened?" Jeremy asked, his eyes sharp.

"The place we were staying caught fire. Hazel saved me; otherwise, you might not be seeing me now," Lawrence said, not going into details but making sure to credit Hazel.

As expected, Jeremy's expression changed. "Have you found out the cause of the fire?"

"It's still under investigation. We'll find the culprit," Lawrence assured him.

After sitting for a while, Jeremy left the room and ran into Hazel outside. "Hazel, I have a few words for you."
