Chapter 26 The Cause of Rachel's Death
Hazel wanted to disappear into the floor.
Did that mean Lawrence had heard everything she said afterward?
As if to rub it in, he leaned in a bit closer and said, "Mrs. Johnson knows how tough it is for me to make a buck. I'm really touched."
As soon as he finished, he saw Hazel's face turn bright red. She threw a pillow at him, which he caught and set aside. Hazel then lay down and covered her face with the blanket. "Lawrence, get out!"
Her voice, muffled by the blanket, was filled with frustration. Lawrence chuckled softly, knowing Hazel was just embarrassed.
After all, it was the first time he had seen her blush.
Jason, who was standing at the door, heard the commotion and didn't dare say a word.
It wasn't until Lawrence wheeled himself out that Jason followed him out of Hazel's hospital room.
Hearing the sound of Lawrence leaving, Hazel uncovered her face and stared blankly at the ceiling.
The redness on her face had faded. She took a deep breath and sat up, trying to calm herself.
She didn't know why, but she felt a strange sense of shame.
It was like being caught doing something wrong.
The room was very quiet. After calming down, Hazel got out of bed, planning to take a walk downstairs.
Outside, Jason saw her come out and asked, "Mrs. Johnson, where are you going?"
Hazel answered, "I'm just going downstairs for a bit. I'll be back soon."
Hearing this, Jason nodded and let her go.
There was a mall near the hospital, and Hazel planned to get a drink.
As soon as she stepped out of the hospital lobby, she noticed Matilda and Cheryl still hadn't left. They were standing in a corner, seemingly deep in conversation.
Hazel lowered her gaze, thought for a moment, and quietly approached them, finding a hidden spot to eavesdrop.
"Mom, what are we going to do? Hazel refuses to give up the formula and won't let the Johnson Family help us. Dad's company won't last much longer," Cheryl said anxiously, clutching Matilda's arm. "That little witch clearly doesn't want to help our family. She never intended to. We should have been more ruthless last time."
If they had forced Hazel to hand over the formula when she visited the Anderson family, they wouldn't be in this mess now.
And they wouldn't have to endure Hazel's mockery while begging for her help today.
"I don't know why she's so lucky to have met someone like Lawrence. Mom, I can't stand her attitude. If I were Mrs. Johnson, Dad's company wouldn't be in this situation." Cheryl added.
As a mother, Matilda knew Cheryl best.
Seeing Cheryl's expression and recalling her attitude towards Lawrence in the hospital room, Matilda immediately guessed what was going on.
Cheryl liked Lawrence.
Matilda said, "If you want him, it's not impossible."
Cheryl's face lit up with surprise. "Really?"
Matilda lovingly patted Cheryl's head, her eyes full of tenderness. "Of course. When have I ever lied to you? But right now, our priority is to get the formula from Hazel. Chloe guarded it like a hawk, even in death. We should have dealt with Hazel and her mother Rachel together back then. It would have saved us a lot of trouble."
Matilda's eyes were filled with venomous malice. One wouldn't doubt that if Hazel were in front of her, she would kill her.
Cheryl nodded. Hazel had humiliated her in front of Lawrence today. She was definitely going to settle this score with Hazel!
And Lawrence, he was going to be hers, no question about it.
Neither of them noticed Hazel eavesdropping from a distance.
What did they mean? Could Rachel's death be connected to them? Hazel's hands trembled slightly as she fought the urge to confront them. She returned to her room, her expression numb.
Jason had just come from Lawrence's room. Seeing Hazel's odd expression, he thought better of disturbing her.
Locking the door behind her, Hazel sat on the bed, hugging her knees and burying her face in them, unable to calm down.
She had always thought Rachel died of illness, but after hearing Matilda's words today, she doubted everything.
Rachel's death might not have been due to illness. There could be another reason.
Once she started recalling, she noticed many inconsistencies.
Hazel remembered that two months before Rachel's death, her health had suddenly deteriorated, even though she had been fine before.
Keith had married Matilda immediately after Rachel's death, without any hesitation.
There was definitely something fishy about it.
She had to uncover the truth about Rachel's death and make Keith and Matilda pay!
This thought grew stronger in her mind. Hazel decided to establish her perfume company as soon as possible.
Since Keith wanted her perfume formula so badly, she would use the very thing Keith coveted to defeat him.
She would bring down the Anderson Group that he had built.
There was a knock on the door. Hazel knew who it was. After calming herself, she opened the door to find Lawrence.
Not wanting Lawrence to know what had happened, Hazel tried to appear calm. "What's up?"
Lawrence saw through her act but didn't call her out. "Are you going home tonight? You can be discharged now."
Hazel was taken aback for a moment, then nodded. "Sure."
She wasn't comfortable staying in the hospital and wanted to sleep in her own bed.
After packing up, Hazel and Lawrence left the hospital together. The driver from a few days ago had been replaced by Jason. Once in the car, Hazel texted Kelly to let her know she was discharged.
Lawrence hadn't informed the Johnson Mansion in advance, so when they arrived, Toby was surprised to see them.
"Mr. Lawrence Johnson, Mrs. Johnson, weren't you supposed to be discharged tomorrow?"
Toby asked, stepping forward to take their things and follow them inside.
"We're fine now and wanted to come back early. Is Grandpa home?" Lawrence asked.
"Mr. Jeremy Johnson is home. I'll go inform him." Toby answered.
Lawrence waved his hand. "No need. Hazel and I will go upstairs. Let Grandpa rest."
Toby had no choice but to agree, but he stopped them before they went upstairs.
"Mr. Lawrence Johnson, Mrs. Johnson, wait a moment." Toby said.
Hazel and Lawrence were puzzled until they saw Toby holding a spray bottle. "This is holy water, to ward off illness and misfortune. It's a good omen."
Lawrence's temple twitched slightly, but he held back.
The butler sprayed them with holy water before they could go upstairs. Once inside, Hazel went straight to take a shower and change clothes. When she came out, she heard Lawrence talking on the phone on the balcony.
Curious, Hazel approached the balcony, only to meet Lawrence's gaze as he turned around.
"Come here." Lawrence said.
