Chapter 7 Most Compatible with Sandra
Lawrence knew exactly what was going on. He had purposely delayed his visit to the Anderson family today to test Hazel. "Anything else?"
As soon as he said it, a rare pang of regret hit him.
The night was deep, and the silence was so intense that they could hear each other's breathing, creating an unspoken closeness.
Hazel hadn't thought that far ahead. She paused for a moment after hearing his question. "Well, besides that, Mr. Johnson, you're handsome, rich, and powerful. Every woman probably wants to marry you."
Her tone was playful, but then she suddenly switched gears. "Why all the questions, Mr. Johnson? Could it be that you've fallen for me?"
The sound of knuckles tightening echoed in the room. Lawrence gritted his teeth and replied, "You're overthinking it."
With that, Lawrence removed Hazel's hand from his face and lay back down. "Aren't you going to sleep?"
Detecting the irritation in his tone, Hazel pouted and lay back down too.
After this little commotion, the suffocating fear from her nightmare eased a bit, but now she was wide awake, her mind replaying the events of the past two days.
She didn't know how much time had passed when she heard faint murmurs, tinged with pain.
It was Lawrence's voice.
With a slight frown, Hazel raised her hand and gently patted his head in a soothing manner.
His hair felt pretty nice.
Hazel made a mental note. It seemed like Lawrence didn't sleep well either. Maybe she could make him some sleep-aid aromatherapy sometime.
After all, Lawrence did save her today.
Unknowingly, she fell asleep again.
The next morning, when Hazel woke up, there was only a trace of warmth left on the pillow beside her. Lawrence was already gone.
After getting up and washing, she went downstairs and saw someone she didn't want to see.
"Some people really have no manners. Look at the time, and you're just getting up. Do you really think you're a rich lady now?" Luna said.
Hazel faced Luna's sharp, sarcastic face and pointed to her own nose. "Are you talking about me?"
"Who else? Look around. Who else but you sleeps in this late?" Luna rolled her eyes and mocked her unceremoniously.
Hazel smirked slightly. "Has the Johnson family gone bankrupt? Didn't I marry into the Johnson family to be a rich lady? Or are you saying the Johnson family is so poor that they can't even afford a wife? Luna, by saying this, aren't you insulting the Johnson family?"
Luna's face turned blue with anger at Hazel's retort.
This sharp-tongued little brat!
"Why are you looking at me like that? It's so scary!" Hazel widened her eyes in feigned fear, further infuriating Luna, who raised her hand to hit her. "You little brat, I'll tear your mouth apart! How dare you think you're worthy of Lawrence? I advise you to..."
"Yes, I'm not worthy. Your niece Sandra is the best match for him. Besides her, you, the early-morning hostess, are also a perfect match." Hazel dodged Luna's attack, her words still merciless.
The servants, hearing the commotion, dared not intervene. They glanced over and quickly left.
"What are you doing?" A voice came from the doorway. It was Lawrence, wheeling himself in, his expression cold.
Hazel quickly ran to his side. "Lawrence, Luna tried to hit me. She said I'm not worthy of you and that we should get divorced."
Lawrence could see through her act of playing the victim. He had heard her sharp retorts to Luna from outside the door.
Luna was no match for her.
Raising his eyes, Lawrence's face darkened. "Luna, you have such strong opinions about my wife so early in the morning. Do you have a problem with me?"
Even though he was sitting in a wheelchair, he exuded an undeniable authority.
Luna was scared and put on a fawning smile. "Lawrence, what are you talking about? I was just reminding Hazel that the Johnson family is a prestigious family. If she does something wrong, it would damage the family's reputation. Don't you agree?"
"There's no need for you to worry about that. Hazel is the person I chose. No matter how she behaves, she's under my protection. And my parents are deceased, so there's no need for her to get up early to take care of elders. It's not your place to instruct her." Lawrence's tone was firm and unyielding.
Mentioning his deceased parents made Luna's face stiffen, and she reluctantly shut her mouth. "I understand."
Although Lawrence was now disabled, she had witnessed his ruthless methods before.
If pushed too far, who knew what he might do?
As for Sandra, she believed there would be opportunities in the future!
"You heard everything, didn't you?" After Luna left, Hazel asked.
So he had been outside the whole time, probably just to watch her make a fool of herself.
For some reason, she felt a bit upset.
"Your voice wasn't exactly quiet. It was hard not to hear." Lawrence replied, making Hazel speechless. But she quickly moved on.
"Have you had breakfast?" Lawrence asked.
"No, I just came downstairs." Hazel replied.
Hearing Lawrence's question, Hazel shook her head. She hadn't expected to oversleep.
"Let's eat then. I haven't eaten yet either. Let's eat together." Lawrence said.
Surprised, Hazel asked, "Didn't you just go out?"
Lawrence replied, "I had something to take care of. Why, you don't want to eat with me?"
For some reason, Hazel sensed a hint of danger in his tone. "Of course I do. I'd love to."
Hazel pushed Lawrence to the dining table, where breakfast was already laid out with various options.
Having been locked up all day yesterday, Hazel had barely eaten. After the hospital visit, she was genuinely hungry.
She immediately sat down and started eating heartily.
In contrast, Lawrence ate with elegance, like a noble.
"Honey, can I ask you a question?" Hazel said.
With many people around on the first floor, Hazel changed her address to avoid gossip.
Lawrence felt a twinge of pleasure at her calling him 'honey,' but he maintained his composure and responded coolly, "Go ahead."
"I noticed that since I married you and came home, besides Luna, I haven't seen anyone else. Don't they live here?" Hazel asked.
There were rumors that Jeremy Johnson doted on Lawrence, but since their marriage, none of the Johnson family elders had shown up, which was unusual.
Lawrence paused slightly while holding his spoon. "You'll meet them soon enough."
After breakfast, Lawrence went to his study to work, while Hazel wandered around the Johnson family villa with Jason.
"By the way, are there any puppies in the backyard?" Hazel asked.
Remembering what Lawrence had said last night, Hazel was curious.
Jason's expression turned complicated. "Mrs. Johnson, there are no puppies in the backyard."
But there were big dogs, very fierce ones!
"Really?" Hazel asked.
"Really." Jason replied.
"No way, take me to see. I have nothing else to do anyway." Hazel said.
Once her curiosity was piqued, it was hard to ignore it.
Seeing Hazel's insistence, Jason had no choice but to agree, though he gave her a few more warnings. "Mrs. Johnson, since you insist on seeing, just don't be scared."
