Chapter 5
My eyes darted left and right as I inched towards the car. When I saw no one was in sight, I snatched the wallet and stuffed it into the purse.
Just before I could turn the other way, a cold hand caught my wrist. “Going somewhere, little thief?”
My blood froze.
How did he get here? I didn't sense him coming.
“Turn around.” He said. His deep voice was far too calm for someone who had just caught a thief.
Slowly, I turned around to look at him and my heart sank. I knew him.
Tall figure towering over me, piercing blue eyes, and a jaw carved from granite.
Alpha Sebastian.
Immediately, I fell to my knees. “F - forgive me, my Lord. Please - -”
“You didn't mean to steal from me?” He glared at me.
My cheeks burnt red with embarrassment and I bowed my head.
“If that's the case then why are you hands telling a different story?” He said.
“Please, sir, I … My children are hungry. I didn't have anything else to do.”
“Mommy?” I heard Adam behind me.
I gasped and turned around. There they were, my triplets standing together in their identical clothes.
Alpha Sebastian’s eyes flickered to them and I could see something shift in them. He looked down at me and put his hand in his pockets. I was scared he might try to harm us and I flinched.
“Here.” He tossed a thick wad of dollars on the floor. “Take it.”
“What?” I stared at the dollar bills on the floor in disbelief.
“Take it.” He repeated flatly. “Feed your kids and stay out of trouble.”
“Thank you, sir.” Tears spilled down my cheeks as I reached for the money on the floor. “Thank you so much.”
He turned away without another word.
That night, we had warm food in our bellies with enough to spare and a roof over our head at a motel.
Alpha Sebastian — the ruthless Alpha of the Starlight Pack had shown me mercy.
Lucky me.
The boys and I returned to the East side pack now renamed Vixen pack. Everything was not the same — the streets, the buildings, everything was different. I felt like a stranger in my own home.
With the money, Alpha Sebastian had given to me, I rented a small apartment. It wasn't much but it was enough to shelter the 4 of us.
Money runs faster when there's plenty of mouths to feed and by weekend, it was at my wit's end.
The next morning, after kissing Adam, Adrian, and Aria goodbye, I left them with my kind, elderly neighbour and went job hunting.
My job hunting led me to the towering glass building of MoonCrest Enterprises, the most powerful company in the pack.
To be honest, I don't know what motivated me to consider seeking employment here but here I am.
I stepped inside the building and felt hopelessly out of place immediately.
My simple worn out shoes, faded dress and ponytail drew disapproved glances.
“Excuse me,” I said to the woman behind the reception desk. “I… I'm here to inquire about job openings.”
She tapped away at the keyboard, not looking up from her keyboard. “Interviews are only by appointments and - -”
She looked at me and scrunched her nose in disgust. “Ummm.. I think you're in the wrong building, ma'am. The dry cleaning store is 2 streets away.”
What the hell?
I heard quiet snickers behind me and turned around to find 2 ladies whispering. When our eyes met, they quickly looked away.
“Umm… I'm not in the wrong place, ma'am.” I said with a thin smile.
“You think?”
The laughter was becoming overbearing so I clenched my fist. “I'm sorry, ma'am, but I won't be leaving until I've spoken to someone in charge.”
“I'm calling security!” The woman said.
Immediately, two security guards approached me.
“Lady, we'll be forced to remove you if you don't leave this building.” One of them said,
“I'm not leaving without speaking to the person in charge. I'm here for an interview!
One of the guards grabbed my arm.
I pulled away. “Don't touch me!”
“What's going on here!” A voice boomed in the marble hall.
The staff parted like water and there stood Alpha Damon flanked by a familiar face — Alessia.
My breath got caught in my throat.
“H - Skylar?” Alessia's smile faltered and her arm linked with his loosened. She looked more beautiful and better than I expected — shiny golden hair, dazzling jeweled dress, and her lips painted red.
While Alpha Damon… ah… he was much more handsome than I remembered. Well, 7 years is a long time after all. Those broad shoulders, sharp silver eyes and commanding aura. This was Alpha Damon in the flesh.
“Skylar?” Alpha Damon asked with a puzzled look on his face.
Alessia noticed the tension in the air and gave a forced laugh. “Skylar… Oh my Goddess, it's you.”
Alpha Damon looked between both of us. “You're twins?”
“I - uh..” Before I could say anything, Alessia tightened his arms. “Yes, we're twins. Skylar… uh…Skylar's been far away. She left when we were young, right, Skylar?”
My stomach churned and I nearly threw a punch at her for her goddamn lies.
“Oh Skylar,” Alessia pulled away from Damon and took a step forward to hug me.
“Don't...” I took a step back. “So I've been away?...”
I sniffled softly, “Sure. I was away but I'm back now.” Then, I looked at Alpha Damon. “And I'm looking for a job.”
Alpha Damon’s silver eyes locked into mine. His eyes wondered, searching my face as if looking for the truth.
“You're looking for a job?” He asked.
“Yes, I'm the mother of triplets and I need to feed them.”
Alessia flinched. “You've given birth?”
“Yes.” I said with tears in my eyes.
Alessia looked between me and Damon. “Well…uh… if you need a job here. You'd have to go through an interview - -”
“- - which Alessia oversees the hiring process. She'll handle your case.” Damon interrupted..
“What?” Alessia gasped. Then she regained her composure. “I mean, sure. I can handle that.”
“Good. Be here tomorrow for the interview.” Damon said and walked away with Alessia following behind him.
As they disappeared into the hall, I stood there with my fists clenched. I wouldn't let anyone step on me anymore.
Damon's POV
I leaned back in my chair, staring out the window of my penthouse.
It was her.
The woman in the lobby with Skylar. Alessia's twin sister.
Why didn't Alessia mention her before?
An image of her face flickered in my mind and I shut my eyes, trying to recall her scent.
“Skylar…why do I feel like I know you?”
