Chapter 6
I was engrossed in my book when I noticed Masha running to me, chattering away on her phone. She thrust it into my hand, and I shot her a questioning look.
“What am I supposed to do with this?”
“Chew it,” she quipped, rolling her eyes.
I scoffed. “Tsk!”
“Remi wants to speak with you,” she informed me.
My eyes grew bigger, and I hastily passed the phone back to her. Remi and Masha shared a similar assertive demeanor.
“Go ahead, answer it,” she insisted.
I shook my head and squinted my eyes in apathetic disgust, but she simply shrugged and handed it back to me, as if to imply I had no choice. Drawing a long breath, I reluctantly brought the phone to my ear and greeted Remi with a brusque tone.
“Amara!” Her exuberant voice nearly deafened me.
How could her husband cope with it?
“What?” I retorted unenthusiastically.
She laughed at my rudeness. “Do you know you’re one beautiful and lucky woman? I can’t believe the Moon Goddess graced you with such a hot mate!”
Masha must have spilled the beans to her. I shot her a pointed glare, to which she sheepishly offered a peace sign and an awkward smile as she listened to our conversation.
“What are you going to do? I want to see you and ask for more information about the two of you. Have you already started the mating process? Girl, try him out!”
I face-palmed. “This is what I’m talking about,” I thought to myself.
It wasn’t that I didn’t want to talk to her, but no one would understand how annoying she was if they didn’t know her. She always spoke without a filter, and I couldn’t remember how I ended up being friends with someone like her in the first place.
“Watch your mouth, Remi! Your husband might hear you!” I warned her.
Her husband was overly possessive of her. I wasn’t sure whether Remi charmed him or what. The last time Max was jealous, he resorted to violence.
She giggled. “It’s fine, Amara. He loves my mouth.”
My eyes widened in disgust at the despicable words she babbled. Masha beamed and screeched. I couldn’t believe I’m friends with these two.
“Shut up, or else I’ll hang up!”
“Okay, okay. I’ll stop. Chill,” she said, stopping me from hanging up. “So, let’s go back to the conversation. What’s your plan?”
I gasped for air as I muddled over what to do with a resigned expression on my face. “I don’t really have a plan. I’ll just go with the flow. Whatever happens, happens.”
“You sounded uninterested. Don’t you like him?”
I glanced at Masha who was also waiting for my answer. I knew she was itching to ask me the same question, but I wasn’t ready to talk about it yet.
“It’s not that I don’t like him, but I’m not sure if I’m ready for anything right now,” I explained.
“So, you’re planning on rejecting him?”
I let out a quiet sigh. “I guess I do want to reject him–” But I knew my mind wouldn’t let me…
“I won’t let you!”
I was taken aback when I heard the familiar voice shouting behind me. I immediately turned around to see who it was. To my surprise, it was him – standing by the door topless and dripping with sweat. I heard the news that he had been out hunting for rogues who had crossed into our territory. Beside him was his Beta, Gamma, and the ten pack warriors, looking terrified.
I was surprised as well. I wasn’t done speaking yet. I was about to explain myself when he interrupted me, his speed making me stumble over my words. I didn’t realize we had arrived at his chamber. This was only my second time in here because I refused to share a bed with him.
He slammed the door shut and pinned me against the wall. I wouldn’t deny, I felt a little nervous when I saw the anger in his eyes, matching the color of his wolf’s eye – the same as mine. I grimaced as he held my jaw and lifted me a little. Although it wasn’t intense, I could feel the tightness.
“I will never allow you to reject me. I didn’t wait for so long just to blow this opportunity,” he growled.
“Wait, let me go!”
His hold on me was tight, and he was already mad without even hearing the rest of what I was about to say.
“Don’t even try, Amara Dale! I won’t be convinced otherwise,” he snapped.
I looked into his fiery eyes. I knew that no matter what I explained, he wouldn’t listen to me. He was pretty angry.
I exhaled through my nose. “I won’t reject you. I promise,” I said, trying to calm him down.
He eyed me skeptically, and the fire in his eyes gradually died down. He slowly let go of me and stepped back, staring at me intently. I met his gaze without flinching. Maybe if it had been other wolves, they would have been scared, but not me. Even if I wasn’t his mate, I wouldn’t be scared of him. I wasn’t not afraid of anyone or anything. When you had nothing to lose, fear became irrelevant.
“Don’t say that again, okay?”
I sat on the bed and nodded in agreement. He was leaning against the door, which caught my attention. My forehead wrinkled as I noticed he still didn’t have a t-shirt on.
“Put a shirt on. You might catch a cold,” I told him.
He raised two eyebrows and tilted his head to the side, staring at me with a look between mockery and admiration.
“Thanks for your concern, honey, but I won’t die easily from that.”
“Suit yourself,” I said nonchalantly.
“Why? Don’t you like what you see? What do you prefer? Topless or naked?” he teased.
“Naked.”
My cheeks turned red when I heard Selene’s voice in my head answering his question. She was so bold!
“What the hell? You’re embarrassing, Selene!” I scolded her mentally.
Damien let out a soft chuckle. “Oh, your little wolf wants to see me naked, huh?”
“Shut the fuck up!” I snapped, feeling my face grow hotter.
“Don’t use that F word on me, honey. You might regret it,” he warned playfully.
Without warning, I stood up and lunged at him. My hand grabbed the nearest object on the table and hurled it at him with all my might, but he was quick to react and caught it with his hand before it could reach him.
Frustrated, I threw a punch and aimed a kick at him, but he effortlessly evaded them. I was becoming even more angry because none of my attacks seemed to land. Instead of retaliating, he simply blocked my punches and swift kicks. He was excellent at dodging and it only fueled my rage.
In the heat of our brawl, I couldn’t help but ask, “Don’t you know that most people find me intimidating?”
A hint of amusement flickered in his eyes. “Of course, I know. But what they fear, I admire.”
The moment his attention drifted to the small gap between us, I saw my chance and quickly wrapped his head in my arms. But he swiftly broke free and flipped our positions, pinning me against the wall. I struggled against his strong hold, but it was no use. I was stunned into silence when he pulled my waist closer to him, and then a cocky grin spread across his face.
“I’m surprised to see you’re even more beautiful up close…”
“Stop trying to provoke me, you jerk!” I yelled and gathered all my strength to break free of his hold by striking him once more.
He only sneered in response while parrying my attacks, which enraged me even more. With each defense of him, I carefully studied his moves. Being one of the strongest protectors in the pack, I learned fast and quickly adapted to his fighting style right away. And without giving any hints, I changed my tactics and landed a powerful kick to his chest.
He was caught off guard and flew off the balcony, much to my satisfaction. But as I peered down at him, my jaw tightened because he seemed to be enjoying this. I clenched my fists. This arrogant Alpha King wouldn’t get away for messing with me! I must teach him a lesson!
The pack members below were frozen in shock as they watched our intense confrontation. Oh, the chaos hadn’t even started. Little did they know, this was only the beginning. This Alpha King was testing my patience, and I refused to let him win.
“Then let’s see what you’re made of, honey,” he teased in my mind.
I was seething with anger as I angrily ripped off the jacket I was wearing. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on him and crush him into pieces. My eyes were blazing with fury, as evidenced by how mad I was.
I gritted my teeth. “You’ll pay for this!”
“I’d like to see you try,” he set me up for a challenge before sprinting into the woods, taunting me with his words.
I flexed my fingers. “Oh, so you want me to hunt you?”
Challenge accepted.
“Catch me if you can…”
