Chapter4:Shadows of the Past
The night was unnaturally quiet as Evangeline and Lucian walked through the dimly lit streets. The wind whispered through the alleyways, carrying with it the scent of something ancient and unseen. Every step she took felt heavier than the last, the weight of Aldric’s words pressing down on her like an invisible force.
Lucian remained silent beside her, his presence steady but brooding. His crimson eyes flickered toward her every so often, as if gauging her reaction to what had just transpired.
"What’s on your mind?" she finally asked, breaking the silence.
He hesitated, then sighed. "You handled yourself well back there, but Aldric isn’t someone to take lightly. He plays games with people, tests them until he finds their weaknesses. And he’s interested in you. That’s dangerous."
Evangeline wrapped her arms around herself, the memory of her blood awakening her senses still fresh. "I don’t understand what’s happening to me, Lucian. That moment—when I held the dagger—it was like everything around me sharpened. I could hear, smell, even feel things I shouldn’t. And the hunger... it was real."
Lucian’s jaw tightened. "That was just the beginning. You’re going to experience more of it. The thirst will come and go, but the more you deny it, the stronger it becomes."
She stopped walking and turned to face him. "What if I don’t want this? What if I refuse to become… whatever it is I’m supposed to be?"
Lucian exhaled sharply, his expression unreadable. "Then you’ll be hunted. You’re too valuable to be left alone, Evangeline. The vampires will want to control you. The hunters will want to kill you. And if you don’t learn to harness your power, you’ll be defenseless against both."
A chill ran down her spine. She knew he was right. Aldric’s warning, Lucian’s protectiveness—it all led to one conclusion: she was no longer just a girl caught between two worlds. She was a prize, a weapon, and a target.
Before she could respond, the air shifted. A faint rustling sound echoed through the narrow street, and Lucian’s eyes darkened. In a blink, he grabbed Evangeline and pulled her into the shadows of a nearby alcove, pressing a finger to his lips in a silent command to stay quiet.
Footsteps. Light, but deliberate.
Evangeline held her breath as figures emerged from the darkness, cloaked in the night. Their presence sent a ripple of unease through her, and she instinctively knew—they weren’t human.
Lucian’s grip on her wrist tightened. "Stay behind me," he murmured.
The figures came to a halt a few feet away, their faces obscured by darkness. One of them, a tall man with an air of authority, stepped forward. His voice was smooth, yet carried an edge of menace. "The dhampir. I was beginning to think the rumors were exaggerated."
Lucian shifted slightly, shielding Evangeline. "Who sent you?"
The man chuckled. "Does it matter? There’s a bounty on her head, and I intend to collect it. Step aside, vampire. This doesn’t concern you."
Evangeline’s heart pounded. A bounty? Already?
Lucian’s stance grew lethal. "You’ll have to kill me first."
The man smirked. "If that’s how you want to do this… so be it."
In an instant, chaos erupted. The figures lunged, and Lucian met them with terrifying speed. Evangeline barely had time to react before she was thrown into the fray, instincts kicking in as she dodged an attacker’s grasp.
The battle had begun, and there was no turning back.
Evangeline stumbled backward as one of the assailants lunged at her. Her newly heightened senses flared to life, and she ducked just in time to avoid a clawed hand swiping at her face. A surge of power rushed through her, and before she knew what she was doing, she lashed out, her fist connecting with the attacker’s chest. He flew backward, crashing against the stone wall with a sickening crack.
She gasped, staring at her own hands in disbelief. "Did I just—?"
"Focus!" Lucian shouted, his blade slicing through the air as he took down another foe. His movements were fluid, effortless, a deadly dance of precision and power. "They’re not going to stop until you’re dead or captured!"
Evangeline clenched her fists, determination replacing her fear. She wasn’t going to be taken. Not tonight.
The leader of the group narrowed his eyes as he watched her. "Impressive. You’re awakening faster than I expected. But that won’t save you."
He moved with supernatural speed, appearing in front of her before she could react. His hand shot out, grabbing her throat and lifting her off the ground. She struggled, panic flooding her senses as her vision blurred. His grip was like iron, suffocating.
Lucian roared, but before he could reach her, something inside Evangeline snapped.
A raw, primal force erupted from deep within her, and with an anguished scream, a pulse of energy burst outward. The force sent her captor flying, slamming him into the opposite wall. He groaned, coughing up blood, his expression one of pure shock.
Evangeline collapsed to her knees, gasping for air, her entire body trembling. The attackers hesitated now, uncertainty flashing in their eyes.
Lucian didn’t waste the opportunity. He moved like a shadow, cutting down the remaining enemies with ruthless efficiency. Within moments, the street was silent once more, the bodies of their assailants scattered around them.
He knelt beside her, gripping her shoulders. "Are you okay?"
She looked up at him, eyes wide with confusion and fear. "What did I just do?"
Lucian’s expression was grim. "You fought back. And you won."
Evangeline shivered, wrapping her arms around herself. The hunger inside her had waned, but something else had taken its place. Power. Raw, untamed power.
Lucian helped her to her feet, his gaze unreadable. "We need to leave. More will come. And next time… they won’t underestimate you."
Evangeline nodded, swallowing hard. One thing was certain—she could no longer deny what she was becoming.
And the world would soon know it too.
As they disappeared into the night, an unseen pair of eyes watched from the shadows, a smirk forming in the darkness. "So, the little dhampir has teeth," a voice murmured. "This just got interesting."
