Chapter 2: Unexpected call

Carina gasped, new girlfriend? Since when did Deon start seeing someone else? Why didn't she know this? Who was this girl?

It only meant that the whole thing had been planned a long time ago; he had already planned to leave the country, but he was now telling her about it, how could he be this evil?

"New girlfriend? Since when?" she managed to ask, but Deon's neighbor shrugged,

"About two months ago. I thought you guys broke up. Because you weren't coming around too regularly, but she was here all the time. I honestly thought things had ended between you two." the neighbor gossiped.

Carina shook her head, still unable to process the shock she was going through,

"Okay, thank you... very much for the information." She managed to say to the woman and started to walk away.

"Careful on your way," the neighbor replied. Carina only nodded because her tears wouldn't allow her to speak,

She got home quite late and couldn't even ring the doorbell of the apartment she shared with her sister properly; she was still shaking from the shock and emotional injuries she had just suffered,

Claudia, her younger sister, opened the door with a smile on her face, "Did you take my order..." she said but stopped when she noticed her sister's mood,

"What's wrong?" she asked helping her get inside the apartment and closing the door behind them.

"Deon..." Carina muttered amidst tears.

"What did he do?" Claudia asked with a frown and clenched fists, preparing herself for a fight at the mention of that name.

"He broke up with me... and I went to his house to plead with him but he was... he was gone, his neighbor said he left with his new girlfriend." She bitterly narrated with a fresh set of tears streaming down her face.

"Oh dear, calm down, that jerk doesn't deserve your tears, if he's gone, just let him, Dad didn't like him anyway, none of us did." Claudia tried to comfort her. Just like the rest of the family, Claudia did not support Carina's relationship with Deon, but being the little sister, she never spoke against it either, she just stayed out of their business.

Carina raised her head, when she remembered her pregnancy, what was she going to do now that she was carrying the child of a man who had abandoned her? How was she going to break this news to anyone? The only person she could confide in was her sister but even with that, she was afraid to tell her, what if she told their parents? They would have her head,

"You don't understand Claudia, my life is over, I'm literally dead," she said.

"Come on, what did that guy even do for you throughout your two years of being in a relationship?... your life can't be over just yet..."

"I'm pregnant, Claudia. I'm carrying his child." Carina blurted out tearfully.

Claudia gasped and covered her mouth in her palms, this was a major disaster especially if their father heard of it, he may even kick them out of the apartment he had rented for them and cut off all the allowances he was providing for them. What were they going to do now?

"Oh no, Carina you have to get rid of it, you can't keep it, Dad will have your head." Claudia panicked,

"But I don't want to get rid of it," she said.

Claudia exhaled out of frustration, she couldn't understand why her sister would hold on to a baby whose father had already walked out of the picture.

"Listen to me, an abortion is not that bad..." as she was trying to talk her sister into it her phone screen went on, she got distracted and picked it up to check and it was one of the Instagram models she was following. She had posted a vlog on her trip out of the country with her new boyfriend.

She was about to put the phone down, but was also eager to see her boyfriend's face, a few seconds later he popped up in the video, and it was no other person than Carina's beloved boyfriend, Deon.

She gasped and covered her mouth for the second time that night, Carina stared at her a little bit concerned about her attitude.

"What is it?" she asked.

"Deon... he just posted his new girlfriend, she's a popular Instagram model or whatever she calls herself!" Claudia exclaimed.

Carina panted for breath, she couldn't believe what was happening, this couldn't be true.

"Is she someone you follow"

"Yes, and you follow her too, she always has some nice content," Claudia said.

"Oh my god! He told me he was relocating to France because he had a promotion at work." Carina exclaimed,

Claudia nodded, "It looks like they are relocating alright"

The sisters went silent both, lost in their thoughts,

"Carina you have to get rid of this baby before it's too late," Claudia tried to plead with her,

"No! I already vowed to myself never to get rid of any child, I won't do it. Even if mom and dad abandon me..."

"They won't abandon just you, they will abandon me too, and that's not the only problem... this child will grow up without a father, they will search and search for answers that they may never find. It will be painful, spare this child that trauma."

Her words seemed to have an effect on her sister, yet she was adamant. She wanted to keep the child but she didn't want to drag her sister down with her, especially when they faced the wrath of their father.

Carina's phone started ringing and when she checked it, it was a call from her father, out of fear and panic she answered it,

"Hello, Carina."

"Hello, Dad," she replied trying to hide the despair in her voice.

"How are you and your sister?" he asked in a grim voice.

"We are fine Dad, how about you?" she asked.

"I'm doing well, can you come home tomorrow with your sister, there's an important issue I need to discuss with you," he said.

What he said made her blood rush up her head, she was afraid that her dad had heard something because he barely ever called for meetings like this,

"Yes... yes Dad," she answered, "We will be there right after work tomorrow," she said but throughout the night she couldn't sleep, she kept wondering what on earth her father had to discuss with her,

"Has he heard that I'm pregnant and going to be a single mother?" she asked her sister who shrugged.

"Honestly, I don't know, but let's pray it's something else, or we are in very big trouble," Claudia replied.
