Chapter Three
Annabel stepped out of the room, the tension she had been feeling spiking as she stepped into the tense corridor where Raffaele was standing, leaning against the wall, arms crossed against his broad chest and his expression unreadable. He looked like he'd been waiting all through the surgery she was performing. Every muscle in her body ached but she forced herself to stand tall.
“How is she?” His cold and demanding voice cut through the tension in the atmosphere. His voice seemed to make the weight on her shoulders even heavier than it already was.
Annabel didn't reply immediately, she let out a sigh before looking up at him. “She's stable.” Annabel said. “The surgery went well, but there were times when it wanted to get out of control. For now, she's good, just has to be kept under close watch.”
Raffaele didn't move or speak. He didn't know whether to go in or to stay out but she wasn't giving him any time to think. She folded her arms across her chest before speaking up.
“I've done what you ask. Now, let me go.”
A muscle in his jaw ticked. “No, not yet.”
Her stomach twisted. “No! That wasn't the deal.”
“We never had a deal.” He replied, walking past her but she pulled him back he stopped in his tracks, looking down at her and she wasn't joking with him. And he wasn't joking either.
“You said we'd talk after surgery and I am done with the surgery. You know nothing will happen to her as long as I successfully perform the surgery, that's why you chose me to do the surgery. And there you have it. Let me go.” She said firmly but only got ignored as he pushed her grip off himself, heading into the room.
Out of frustration, she followed him into the room, stopping him from getting close to her bed. “A patient out of surgery should not be disturbed. And you're not an exception. You can see she is alive and stable from the machines, now let me go.”
“Not untill Pinky is well and better. You would not leave this estate.” He said, obediently turning to leave but he got pulled back again, ticking him off.
“Look here, Mr Don. I appreciate your enthusiasm towards my patient but I have a life out of this place. This is a crime even if it means saving someone's life.” She insisted, glaring up at him despite her body trembling slightly.
The kind of confidence she had after doing her job was unmatched and she used it as an opportunity to stand against him. She knew it was now or never. “Look here, woman.” He said coldly, grabbing her arm and pulling her out of the room. As soon as they got out, he pushed her away.
“Firstly, do not touch me for any reason at all. I didn't bring you here to negotiate with me, I brought you here to render your service to me and that's til Pinky is all better.” He warned her, his aura flaring and she could help but take a step back.
Every nerve in her body screamed to her that he was dangerous like she didn't know that already. It was even now more obvious that he seemed mad at her. Shouldn't he be glad she had saved Pinky and yet he was still as ungrateful as a son of a bitch.
“Take her to her room and serve her something to eat. The surgery must have been stressful.” He gave an order to one of his men who bowed. “Let our relationship go without any trouble Dottoressa Sinclair.”
He didn't wait for her reply before walking away. Annabel felt nauseous. She never thought she would see a day where working would feel like she had her own life on the line. It was like she had the power to save her life but she didn't have the power to save hers.
She was taken into a room with food served for her already. Neat set of clothes folded on the bed which reminded her that she needed a shower but her mind was in a frenzy to do that now. She wasn't even bothered about the food.
She rushed to the balcony in the room, seeing if she could escape. But it was useless. The compound outside was heavily guarded and if she was even able to escape, she knew she would be unable to get anywhere. She didn't know where they were, neither could see return home because she would need her ID.
The only thing she could pick up was the scent of the ocean which was probably not far from here. But it wasn't like knowing any of that would help her.
She was abducted and no one knew. It wasn't like anyone would care either but she had work to do.
She dashed into the room to look for her bag. It was carefully placed on one of the couches and she rushed over to pick it up, rummaging through it to find her phone but it was the only thing missing. Every other things were intact. Of course, she was dealing with a high end mafia group. They wouldn't let something as small as that slip by then.
“This is bullshit, Raffaele. Let me out of this god-damned prison. I don't get my freedom, now my phone too?” She screamed on top of her lungs as if he could hear her.
And which he could. He sat behind his desk, looking at her through the CCTV camera he had them install in the room before placing her there.
“Are you sure about this, Don?” His underboss asked, also staring at the displayed footage. “What if she ends up harming Pinky?”
“I'm sure the doctor is smarter than that.” He replied, lighting himself a cigarette. “If she dares to play petty games with me, I wouldn't hesi
tate to kill her with my own hands.”
