Eidenel's Escape

The King’s hand, Bernard, froze.

If a she-wolf was a mate to the Dragon King, then there was only one explanation to it.

Did the King not know about the prophecy?

“King Archer...” Bernard was suddenly uncomfortable as worried sick.

Archer Bedding looked at Bernard, waiting for him to speak.

“There’s a problem, King. A very big problem.” Bernard was sober.

“Of course, there is a problem. How do I break the news to Julie that my fated mate has to take her place? I love Julie, and discarding her won’t be easy. Do you think that I don’t know how much of a problem that is?” Archer Bedrin complained.

Bernard was stunned at the King’s response.

“King Archer. Have you forgotten about the prophecy? Your mate ought to be a dragon, my King. Not a werewolf.” Bernard started to break down his thoughts before he landed a conclusion at the King.

“For fire’s sake, Bernard. What prophecy is there? I have heard of dragon’s having mates outside our specie. I would not be the first nor the last dragon with a she-wolf for a mate. My only problem is how to convince Julie because I wouldn’t reject my fated mate. I’m not one to do that.” King Archer could be described as a modern Dragon King.

If it were as closely previous as his father who found his mate in another specie, the man, King Archer the first, would have been as troubled as Bernard was, but that could not be said about his son, King Archer Bedrin the second.

The young man didn’t give a hoot about traditional myths, prophecies and what have you.

Bernard looked at the King intensely as he found it difficult to believe that his King indeed did not take such a sensitive issue seriously.

“Bring the girl here.” King Archer suddenly said.

“Let me go and ask them to clean her up as she has been in the dungeon for a few hours. She must smell and look repulsive by now.” Bernard turned his back on the King to leave, but as soon as his back faced the King, something heavy landed on his back.

“Did you put my mate in the dungeon?” King Archer’s eyes were fiery, fire clearly visible in them as he raged at Bernard.

“I’m sorry, King. I didn’t know she was your mate when I asked them to keep her away. I thought she was dangerous to you from the way you acted when you first saw...” Bernard was explaining, but he knew to shut up and go to get Eidenel out before the King completely lost it.

“Mr. Bernard! Mr. Bernard...” As soon as the King’s hand stepped out of the study, someone came running towards him with an emergency.

“What?” Bernard asked, his face looking anxious as he anticipated the information that he would be told.

“It’s the prisoner. The girl we took into the dungeon some hours ago. She has...” the messenger was saying, but he found it hard to make a point.

“She has what?” Bernard asked, his voice descending to a low growl as he waited for the messenger to tell him what he felt he already knew.

“She has escaped my Lord. I was not the one on duty. I only resumed my shift to see that the girl was gone, and the gate to her cell was left open with a duplicate key in it.” The messenger could not even look Bernard in the eyes as he spoke.

The temperature in the room suddenly dropped, and the messenger made sure to keep his head down because if he dared look into Bernard’s eyes, he feared that he would be burnt to death.

Without saying anything, Bernard walked past the messenger, taking heavy strides.

He was going to the dungeon to see for himself.

When Bernard got to the dungeon, he saw everything that the messenger had said.

The small gate of the cell that Eidenel was placed in was ajar, and the keys were inside the keyhole.

Before he arrived there, there was already a lot of people hovering around the cell, from wardens to servants.

Everyone knew that there was trouble brewing.

“Have the boundaries been sealed? Has anyone gone after her?” Bernard asked nobody in particular.

“Yes My Lord. An emergency search party has gone after her.” Came the reply from one of the onlookers.

“She’s the King’s mate. Make sure she returns back here within the next hour or else King Archer’ would turn us to steak for dinner tonight.” Bernard said.

“Also, investigate. Someone let her out. Find out who it is and lock up the warden on duty when she escaped. Lock the lizard up in this same cell.” Bernard instructed with a grim mood.

Looking into Bernard’s eyes, it looked like death.

Bernard also dared not return to the King with such a message.

He left with the next batch of army after Eidenel. He had to bring her back and the reason was far beyond the fact that she was the King’s mate. No. Bernard heavily suspected that Eidenel was The Bringer Of Chaos, and the fact that she had set the Kingdom in confusion at the moment no matter how low-key it was, made him want to put a confirmation to his thoughts.

Meanwhile, Eidenel ran as fast as her legs could carry her, and before anyone would even notice that she jad escaped, Eidenel had crossed the boundaries of the Kingdom, and was well on her way to safety as far as she was concerned.

There was only one problem. Eidenel had still not gotten to taste a drop of water since she arrived at the dragon kingdom.
