Ok, so hear me out. We know that they know each other from the last chapter and that the King was thought to be dead. I feel like maybe he was presumed dead through assassination or something, and she saved him or healed him. Hence upon his return, he had armor with dragon scales on it. There's also the fact that he runs the clinic the way her mother does, maybe as an homage to his time with her, like he saw how he could change his kingdom and was inspired.
